A BSGM  'Lunch and Learn'  online session, bringing together members from across the society to learn and discuss topics of interest to all

Dr Nicki Taverner, genetic counsellor and senior lecturer at Cardiff University and All Wales Genetics Service, and Barbara Stayner, lead consultant genetic counsellor at Oxford Centre for Genomic Medicine, will be delivering this session to discuss the development of the new clinical role of Genomic Practitioner to support the provision of genomic testing across healthcare.
With the increase in genomic testing across healthcare, services need to think creatively about how best to support patients to access appropriate testing and support for their needs, and to streamline the interface between clinical teams and laboratories.
To enable healthcare professionals such as genetic counsellors to focus on aspects of patient care requiring their specialist expertise, other clinical roles are being developed to work alongside them. These include the Genomic Practitioner role soon to be added to the AGNC career structure.
We have looked at how Genomic Practioners (GenPs) are being used in clinical genomics services and developed this role further, producing a standardised job description including the entry requirements, banding, line management and career progression.
We have identified the education and training resources required for someone taking on this role, and carried out a scoping exercise looking at how many of these roles would be required for the population. These resources are available for others to share, to support healthcare professionals both within clinical genetics services and in mainstream medicine.
We aim for this initiative to be genuinely useful to members and serve as a point of collegial conversation across professions and geographies; topics will be selected that are of broad interest and feedback is welcome as we develop the initiative.
All sessions will be recorded and available via the BSGM website for those unable to attend live.
If you are unable to attend and have any questions you would like to submit in advance please send them to Flora Joseph
