BSGM Lunch and Learn - November 2023: Citizen's Jury screening and BSGM AGM
Submit an event
If you would like us to consider publishing details of an event related to genetics and genomics, please submit it here. We regret we are not usually able to publish events unless they are associated with genetics and genomics.
A BSGM 'Lunch and Learn' online session, bringing together members from across the Society to learn and discuss topics of interest to all.
We will be showing a 20 minute film from Wellcome Connecting Science, partnered with Involve and Genetic Alliance UK, about the UK Citizens' Jury on Human Embryo Editing. Alessia Costa, Senior Social Scientist at Wellcome will join us for questions and discussion after the film.
For a week in September 2022, 21 people with personal experience of genetic disease travelled from across the UK to the Wellcome Genome Campus near Cambridge to sit as members of the UK Citizens Jury on Genome Editing. The citizens jury deliberated over 4 days on the following question:
Are there any circumstances under which a UK Government should consider changing the law to allow intentional genome editing of human embryos for serious genetic conditions?
Hear what points were raised and what the outcome of the citizens' jury was. We will also be holding the BSGM annual AGM. We encourage members to attend to hear what the BSGM has been up to over the last year to meet our mission of supporting the promotion, encouragement and advancement of genetic and genomic science in clinical and research practice for the public benefit.
All sessions will be recorded and available via the BSGM website for those unable to attend live.
If you are unable to attend and have any questions you would like to submit in advance please send them to Demetra Georgiou
We aim for this initiative to be genuinely useful to members and serve as a point of collegial conversation across professions and geographies; topics will be selected that are of broad interest and feedback is welcome as we develop the initiative.
This will be our last session of 2023, and we are looking forward to seeing many of you in 2024!
We will have a break in December for Christmas
